Can see one with the theme word but can't see what it has to do with the first part of 27

Eagle, you have to drop the first few letters of 27. Most of the thematics involve minor letter drops.

19 three letter hang - a bit loose - around one letter abbreviation, the geographical head

Pauly, 19 is 1 (29 down) inserted into 3 ("hang", a bit shaky imo) followed by standard crossword 4 ("head").

Still uncertain
Can see a connection to an off Broadway 'play with words' and a short story published in the second half of the 19th century but both seem very tenuous.
I see eight theme connections appearing in a total of 13 solutions plus the bit from the top row.
With 27/31 that would make 9 and no-one seems to have posted that there are that many

Especilly as the connections |that I have for 27/31 do not really fit the theme as all the others do (7 + definition)
