Hi Rocky,

11a - 5 letter "£1000" + 3 letter "plane" then 1 letter "close to France" - definition is "jump" (French, but I only knew it by the second word)

2d - 4 letter "schedule" + 3 letter "tax" + 1 letter "electronic" - definition is "till" (as a verb)

Thanks Brendan. The first word was as I thought but a new phrase for me that one. Is 7d themed? Is that an alternative spelling or just one I haven't heard of.

Thanks Rocky,

7d - not theme related. Usual letter for "wife" + 5 letter "more healthy" - definition is "Perhaps Ahab"

Or did you mean 2d? If so it's a word (verb) based on a registered trademarked machine used to till soil - I had heard of it but no idea from where?

Hi Brendan

No I meant 7d. There is a similar sounding theme word who does not appear anywhere else in the grid and I wondered if it was an alternative spelling.

No talking about football BTW over Christmas but congratulations on a well deserved win. I'll leave it at that. 😉

i'm puzzled by 18a. i must have it right, from 25a. all the bits are there, but what;s the definition, and why the divide signs?
surely there must have been a less google reliant example than ashley olden in 31a? how about tweedledum?
favourite 9a

Chris, I think the second letter is “dividing” the other two… if that makes sense

Chrise. If you think of it as in between rather than divided. But the definition I agree is loose.

Hi Chris,

18a - the divide sign just signifies that the 2nd letter "50" divides/goes in between the first and third - definition is "difficult"

thanks jono and rocky
jono - that seems to account for only one of the signs?
really loose definition, then!
