The three letter term is in Chambers as a Latin prefix, denoting “this side” but for the intended meaning here you need to refer to Collins.

In London this prefix and the opposite Latin one when combined with “-pontine” describe which side of the Thames you are on, which I’ve always rather liked.

Prospero, indeed, I had the same thought about the repetition in those clues. I think it could have been avoided, so assume it is intentional.

Judygs,
In 1d the first definition uses a different meaning for 24d, think boxing. The 1910 thing is just a statement of fact for said model I believe, agree it’s not necessarily needed.

Thank you, jono! I was thinking boxing, didn't know it was a target-specific term. Oh, and pdm for the model!

1910s is not entirely accurate. The model was introduced in 1908 and produced until 1927. Many more were made in the 1920s than the 1910s, as efficiencies drove the price down and demand up. Having said that, true mass production of the model did begin in the 1910s and that's what it's most famous for.

Hi Everyone

I started writing a message two hours ago when I'd only got two. I'm not much further now. It really is hard. I think I need some hints if I'm to make more progress.

What about a hint for 24ac and 18d, which might open up the SW quadrant.
