Thanks Darla I love that movie, just watched the scene again on YouTube after putting the turkey in the oven.

Btw I did get 6d wrong, all corrected, but I'm sorry if I inadvertently confused anyone with my previous post.

Have a great Xmas, and see you again next year

Thanks for the explanation and words of encouragement Quisling. And Jono for the tip of how to spot a compound. I agree with Darla though - why couldn't the clue start with This curry and rice...? That would make more sense, but there is still no indication of the need to subtract some letters to get the answer.

Out of interest, did anyone parse this clue before arriving at the answer, or did most biff it and solve it retrospectively?

Merry Christmas to all, and many thanks for all the help and hints over the last year. There have been many times where I would never have solved, or parsed, a clue without you!

I admit I entered the curry first as I had all the crossers.
I do put answers in first quite a lot then work out the parse.
Naughty girl that I am🤣

Merry Crossmas to all solvers!

First properly quiet day since Christmas, so took the opportunity to solve. Impressed with the consistency of the theme this week. A fun wee solve, 9a (LOI) however, stumped us a bit, i agree with fellow poster.. duck would have made more sense.
10a Fin had solved wrong with "Square"
Apart from that a nice festive one that worked up our appetites!

Happy new year when it comes,

Jim + Fin

Julesvern, I actually parsed/solved the curry clue simultaneously. I couldn't see the answer for the longest time and only deduced it via the composite anagram parsing. I've often attempted composite anagrams in Clueless and Peer Review threads, so am familiar with the device, but (as mentioned upthread) did not expect it in an Everyman.

I only finished the Maskarade epic yesterday so started today with this. Days of the week seem irrelevant at this time of the year! A quick solve that made me ready for breakfast at least. I enjoyed the extra spiciness of 2d! Hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas and has a great New Year.

Just joined. I haven't done cryptics for about 30 years, so very rusty. I just couldn't get the Barolo from the clue. I was stuck on Attar of roses. Where did I go wrong?

OK to post this? The result are available on the web.
