Agreed - a delightful puzzle, but not convinced by the cryptic date. I would have expected the corrected letter in 38A to be V but can only make it work with an X. What have I missed ?

My 38 A definitely worked fine with the V. I no longer have my copy, so can't provide further details - sorry!
