brendan, I am told by google that Letsie III is the king - so only monarchy is needed as the definition - the taking part in tells you where to find the wordplay. 23d???

Right, thanks Jono, thanks Jazzgirl,

I suppose I should have actually looked up the definition in Chambers before posting - "the territory of a monarch".

Still, not like I've ever done that before 😂

... yes, I know where the answer is in the clue, that's why I said I thought "taking part in" was doing double duty.

Whilst I am rubbish at cryptics (today I solved 5 clues), I found this to be the most brutally difficult Everyman this year.

I have googled everything and I understand ~5% of the solutions.

I would break the rules if I asked for explanations!

druh,
it was particularly difficult today I thought.
If yiu give us up to three clue numbers, we could parse them for you without giving the answer

jazzgirl, 18d is a crossword chestnut.

Today's is an Everyman rerun:
https://www.fifteensquared.net/2020/02/23/everyman-3827/

He's also included it as an anagram:
https://www.fifteensquared.net/2020/06/14/everyman-3843/

If you google the string "?????" site:fifteensquared.net
you'll find many more.

Note by Admin - word removed as it is an answer

Hi Chrise @7

I think 9a refers to a hot or cold feed as in term a plumber may use rather than to nourish
