well it seems to me that 12 reads: words 1 and 2 reversed (giving definition), words 3,4 and 5 as written (giving the first 5 letters), opposite of word 6 + conventional letter for word 7 (giving letter 6). Have I got this completely wrong then?

Prospero, it's all reversed so words 7 to 2 are wordplay, word 1 definition

ah, thank you muraria (and the rest of you) - I see I'd been cherry-picking the reversals rather than going all through them - just as well I'm not blogging this month!

I think the word can be used in the plural as well. So skins should be ok.

If it hasn't been explained already ... 15 ACROSS one of themed words. Assume it is British not US spelling. Could someone please explain the construction / word play. I have the revolutionary on the end and O for Oscar

OK - got it! Jeering is the definition with O replacing I and final E deleted. All reversed
