I solved the puzzle but sometimes did not grasp how the clue works.

Especially 13D. The definition seems clear, but the wordplay?

Re 20D: As far as I can tell, the word "good" in the clue is not appropriate.

It was evidently included because it makes the next word deceptively appear to be a noun. But I can find no valid role for "good" at all.

Re 13, the first four letters + the last give a Nissan automobile, albeit one I had never heard of.

And are you sure about 4d? I am unaware of any other spelling.

If you look up "SO" in Chambers, def #19 is "very good".

Oy. So I'm gonna need Chambers (latest edition) to solve Everymans?

I think this may be a "two cultures separated by a common language" type of thang.

daz, as an American I consider "so" [usually = "very", sometimes = "very good"] part of the solver's toolkit, which I had to build up over time.

I refuse to use Chambers out of principle, which disqualifies me from barred puzzle land, but so be it. ;-)
