Lovely and tricky endgame. Didn’t get on with some of the sloppy definitions and synonyms in the clues, I’m afraid, but got there in the end. Except for two clues I still can’t fathom. The unchecked letters in them aren’t needed, as it happens, but I’d love to understand them for my own peace of mind! They are Pale green ices turned up in Sahara desert (I know the extra word) and Matter added into fluid to be thick — I’m not so thick that I can’t spot a candidate word for this one, but I don’t see the wordplay…

Thanks brendan. I had a mistake in the top across clue actually — again, it didn’t matter, luckily. Though that’s one reason I don’t really like these whitewash puzzles: I got one answer wrong, and didn’t figure two others out, but was still able to send in a solution in pretty sure is correct… :-/ I see the anagram for “Matter…”, but I’m still struggling with the matter itself, even knowing the extra letter! Is it the suppuration? If so, this one’s going on my (already long) dodgy definitions/synonyms list, I think…!

...if you look up. 'matter' in Chambers, it's the final definition under the nouns.
