Chrise @ 17 sorry can’t answer your query but the guardian haven’t published any annotated results for October , crosswords , like you I have been looking for HAVEN. Paul is not my favourite compiler ,he may be approaching Araucaria’s total but in my opinion is not in same league.

English (1) plus battle (7) minus last letter and surrounding horse (1). Defn 1st 2 words.

I am giving Paul's a miss this week. Too busy and not my favourite compiler

I like Paul, but am struggling with the theme. I've done some non theme clues, but not a single one with 5/9 of this? So no PDM for me. Perhaps some hints for 16d and 23ac will open up the grid for me. So far all my answers are in the top right hand side (NE corner)

I did what you suggested in @24 and got out my Chambers (I only have a hard copy) and looked through the nouns, but failed to find a suitable definition for take on which I could build a homophone of the word take.

Is the colon relevant? as well as the slash?

Did anyone do the Quick Crossword last week no. 16,681? If you did you’ll be at a distinct advantage. I’m fairly convinced Paul writes a good few of the Quicks, his humour is evident ;-)

Roof, the colon is not important, just a divider.
The slash is key, and "of this" involves a meta interpretation of "this" (if that's not too vague or obscure).
