cruciluci

No kidding!

I'm still looking for the first row. I assume it's before the other three, by dint of the wording.
Even though I know what to look for and have narrowed it down to four, I'm lost.

Also, to anyone who struggled with the extra letters, I looked through the 'collection' for relatively rare letters, F, B, U, etc.
But it's much more easily solved it by just writing them out as they appear in clue order.

It's in the row you'd expect, cruciluci, to make a nice pattern.
Two unusual words.
I like your user name!

Brilliant crossword. Superb construction of the both grid and, often difficult to spot, extra letters, and getting the end game in the correct order is the icing of the cake for me. I found it a relatively straightforward grid stare as one particular letter made things easier - other than the top highlighted row. 10/10 from me.

cruciluci, no doubt that you realise that the first row is the start of the food chain. Both words refer to a genus rather than an individual member.

I think that one's worthy of a round of applause!

When I saw the title I was expecting either the actual collection or Gromit to appear. 😄

In the end it lead me to something rather fine that I was completely unaware of and, as mentioned, the whole construction was 👍

Hats off to Ifor!

Grid filled. Set and item found. Just stuck on final stage. Can’t find the 40 connected cells showing possible realisation. Where should I look?

The setter specifies in rows. Posts 11 and 12 should help?

I offer another voice in the chorus of praise for Ifor’s excellent puzzle. Because there were 27 clues beyond the 9 4 letter ones, I convinced myself that the title of the item would be made up of 27 letters, but had no idea of how ingeniously they would be used, while still clearly signposting the item in question.
