Grateful for Ifor's generosity yet again - I'd have struggled without it (and enjoyed it less).

I agree, drxx, think Ifor is being a tad over-generous though

Come to the aid of the bewildered please, you intelligent ones. I have a full grid, the nine letter word and now haven’t a clue as to what is the next step. Heatstroke is no excuse I know.

The name in the title is a direct hint - try a search with this + the 9 letter word from the not-found letters of the extra words.

I think Ifor could have made the puzzle nigh on impossible to crack, muraria - I searched the grid in vain to get a handle on the theme before I started speculating.
Thanks again, Ifor (as ever, the theme is presented in an elegant way in the grid and the clues).

Well, yes, agreed. I wondered how Ifor might have made the reference a bit more indirect eg to the individual's initials or name that could have been incorporated in the grid as ringed or highlighted cells?
To be honest I'm glad he didn't as grid staring and word bashing are not good for my eyes or sanity. I tried it with this before doing what you suggest below and got nowhere!
And yes, many thanks Ifor, really enjoyed it....

What a superb construction. The extra letters being in thematic order is heavenly. A very clever puzzle with the highlighting only possible at the very end. Bravo, Ifor!

There's a touch of GWIT, isn't there. Once the solver has twigged what the theme is about the scales will fall from the eyes (one hopes). But this solver has found the set, and has glared at the 80-odd things in it, none of which indicate a thematic way of ordering a selection of letters.
A bit more glaring might do the trick, and I don't doubt I shall share in the rejoicing (and the praise) when - if - I am successful. But the journey isn't much fun.

Don't worry about which one of the 80-odd is the right one until you have enough of the extra letters to start making sense of it all - there is a consecutive string of extra letters which will give you the right one of the set immediately, at which point all will be clear.

Lovely puzzle.
Grid-starers beware! Some very obscure words in the endgame.
