Are you going to give the answers jono? I'm not sure I've got 27 right, and if I have I can't parse it.

Will do Chris, I was just giving others a bit longer. From memory that one works with prime numbers and is a fairly recent one from the pen of Buddy…

Thanks to all who gave this a try. Here are the solutions, setters’ names and references to the original threads.

As a point of note, I had to edit a couple of the original clues, one (6D) because it was written as an across clue and in the grid it was a down clue, so ‘back’ became ‘up’; and another (11A) because the original challenge required wordplay to generate an extra letter, so in this case ‘trail’ (a synonym for traipse) became ‘to worship’ (apologies to Darla, as the original clue is far more ingenious!). As I said earlier, I also couldn’t resist cross-referencing 22 and 24, as the two Mad Hatter references emerged purely by chance (original clues given below).

Thanks again, jono - it must have taken you ages.
I did have 27 right, and with your hint I see how it works now. Interesting idea!

Thanks again, Jono. Yes, 22 with 24 was a nice touch. Took me quite awhile to parse 4. I see it as evidenced with the d moved to the front, and "den" removed (gutted.) Is that right?

Hi Darla, here is the parse as provided by Penda on the original thread…

SHOWN = EVINCED

Thus… (D) EVI () CE

I enjoyed the puzzle v much. Thanks again Jono.

It's strange as it sometimes takes a while to 'tune in' to a setter's wavelength so you'd think that a puzzle of clues from multiple setters wouldn't be smooth sailing. However, for want of a better word, the whole thing 'flowed' very nicely. Perhaps there's a house style?
