Lulu666, The first across clue is an anagram of two words, minus the first letter of the second word.

I did actually try that but couldn't find anything to fit.

Bloody hell! I've been using everything to rearrange those letters and no results, so I looked up something close in Chambers and there it was!

Can you give me a hint to put me out of my misery? I started this puzzle late this week - and thought everyone else had done and finished! Just looked in again on the off chance - and you were asking the same thing that was annoying me! I had one 1D - and the letters for the anagram - but , like you , failed to make a word from them

My guess is lulu666 looked up the alternative spelling of 'caliphate' in Chambers and spotted another alt. spelling quite close by (although by definition it's also an anti-British movement).

Yes. I tried every anagram solver I could find on the web as well as Chambers and Bradford to no avail. Eventually I thought I'll just check if caliphate has an alternative meaning, and several words along there was the anti-British movement.
