I think you'll find that 14a is a German, first name Max, the sesquicentenary of whose birth falls this year.

Jazzgirl - Max is really the only person of standing who would fit at 14 and, although his anniversary has gone almost unacknowledged by the Proms, he opens the Berlin Philharmonic's season next week.

I spent some time last week expecting 14 to be the theme word alluded to in 25 and wondering what that G was doing there as middle letter! Eventually I realized that that theme word didn't have its own entry.
