Thanks, jogamel. it was the missing UN that threw me. I was rubbish at tennis and squash - crap hand to eye co-ordination - and was unwittingly bagelled many times!

That's quite deeply buried information! I stopped pondering when I found that the garden (as the garden is specifically mentioned in the preamble) uses levels to create a particular visual effect...best viewed from the top of the staircase.

I don't have the puzzle in front of me but I think it referred to the garden designer rather than the other architect? Doesn't the garden chap have a role to play in the end game?
