You are correct about the word. I don’t know if you were surprised or not so can’t comment there.

Many thanks Buddy,

I am surprised as it seems such an odd phrase with zero confirmation on Google but am at least pleased that I've got it right, especially as I had originally used the B from the motor car in 16d - which caused me all sorts of problems:-)

I am still a bit confused by the parsing of ...

20a - Love captured, not so much as a deposit

... it seems as if the clue is saying that "love captured not so much" but isn't it the other way round and the 4 letter "not so much" captured "love", given that "love" ends up within the "not so much"?

Brendan, I'm seldom good at explaining things but...

I think the commoa (after 'love captured') makes the clue OK. We've to solve the 'love captured' and the 'not so much' parts -and we do to get the answer.

Brendan @9 and 12, the phrase (and the title) refer to a peculiarity of the grand staircase necessary to achieve the unique and unsettling perspectives of the garden which are said to be only apparent if you are there in person and not evident in photographs.

(I now submit my claim to be nominated “nerd of the week”!)

Much appreciated Jack, and I also learned that it costs about 1 million euros to have your wedding there!

Neat puzzle, but just stumped by 1 down. Pretty sure that it begins LIVE.

Ed's work at 54 needs return of employment benefit (probably seven letters with V omitted from the grid). I have L*E*O*

Wasn't thrilled by the use of "bagel" to clue "love" at 1 across.

This is a lovely word I think: Roman numerals for 54 then a 4 letter word for (un)employment payout, reversed. Spenser has some great words and this is in Chambers.

Further to your discussion of the use of the word bagel - for us tennis fanatics it is commonly used for eg. He lost 6-0, 6-0 where we would facetiously perhaps say He was double bagelled.
