One of the four letter words can only go in one place. So the other four letter word must go in the only other four letter slot.
I worked from there…

I managed to get an early start on putting them in the grid, which helped with some of the more complex clues. Still wracking my brain to parse the V&A one though...

corone - the second word indicates that you should reverse the first (it being a down clue)
