Gasmanjack, the whole clue acts as the definition, as is often the case with Everyman’s “primarily” clues.

Hi all, I enjoyed this one, and didn't find it too challenging, apart from the rather odd 'primarily' answer, which, along with others, I'd never come across before.

Also, I still don't understand the use of Peter to mean the first word of 20a. The only definition I can find for it is as in 'to peter out'. Looking for the rhyming pair was what enabled me to get this clue, as I also didn't twig the meaning of 'firth' until afterwards.

A minor quibble, but did anyone else think 1a was a bit dodgy, since the wine in question is not pronounced like that?!

COD was 23a.

As an aside, some people seem to be under the impression that the symbol for hug (14d) is a modern text/social media thing, but I can assure you it is not! I remember using it as a child in the 1960s/70s to end my letters. See here too:

Thanks jazzgirl and darla; just looked on Collins. I have never ever come across that definition for peter before! Nor some of the other meanings either, come to that!
Who knew there were so many?!

I’m still completely stumped by 5D despite 1,3,2,1 hint. I can’t see any hyphenated words that mean anything!

Hi Pippa. 1 letter for American + 3 letters for set (as in set hair) + ‘on’ (from the clue) + 1 letter (seceding in the end)

I'm not surprised you're stumped Pippa, as the answer is not exactly a well-known term! But if you follow the 1,3,2,1 instruction, and then put the hyphen after the third letter, you will come up with the answer (the definition is the first word).

So it goes like this:
1 letter for American followed by a 3-letter word for set (think semi-solid), followed by the 'on' that is in the clue, followed by the last letter (in the end) of seceding.
