i think i've moved all the right words - now all that remains is to solve the clues!

Nice, jono. I was not aware of the work itself but (thanks to my wife and daughters) am all too familiar with the work whose show-stopper is derived from this one. With 2&3 as FOIs Google took me right to the source.

as i said earlier, it's pretty easy to see 3, which gave me a start. after i had moved the words from 3, 4, and 5 i was able to guess a likely 8 letter word, and thus which other words to move

having said that, i still only have solutions for 3 and 4, though!

I always avoid those puzzles where one letter etc has to be removed; also I have a mountain of gardening to do. I have no gardener and 75ft. long garden.
Have just come indoors for cuppa. ☕️

Forgot to mention that it took a few for the penny to drop with #8, but when it did I think the resulting "thunk" was audible in Kansas City. Wicked and clever.

Very clever, jono. I wasn't familiar with the source, but have found it online - I wouldn't have got most of the answers without it.
I'm still struggling with 5. There aren't many possibilities, but I haven't made any fit the clue yet!
