Brendan, thanks - and of course I meant verb rather than noun - I don't know what my fingers were doing then! At least Piffleworthy got the puzzle done, so I mustnt have mucked thing s up too much!

Thanks Malone, I just wanted to make sure I hadn't gone wrong.

I completely messed up the reading of the clashing letters - I did read them L to R as per the preamble, but also row by row as one normally reads text which really held me up making sense of the words - as if they weren't odd enough!

Thanks, Brendan. My brain and my fingers often contradict each other. Yes, I think my reading went a little astray initially, I fared better when I scribbled down the letters on a piece of paper. They became more meaningful then.
