A really enjoyable puzzle for a sunny afternoon. I would really appreciate a hint to get me over the line. My last clueis 18A observation post fell (4). I have ai?e. I think the A maybe a clashing entry?

Yes, it's a double definition with a clash. The observation post is one you might use to spy on animals.

Thank you very much, thought it might be that, but couldn't see where fell came in. Once I corrected a mistake elsewhere in the grid managed to finish it. Very enjoyable

I'm feeling very dim. I actually found The Listener easier than this.

I have a full grid, save for 2d Expression of agreement to change after Department's cut (4), and I have four clashes, being 11a/8d; 16a/3d; 18a/6d; and 29a/30d. None of it yet makes any sense to me!

A gentle push in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure I've gone astray somewhere.

Piffleworthy, 2 D needs a five-letter word for change (noun) with the usual Department removed. You'll be left with a word meaning 'expression of agreement'.

PS That clue involves a clash.

The clashes initially looked odd, but I made sure i was reading them properly, as per the preamble.

Thanks, Piffleworthy. The first name 'appeared' to be nonsense to me, the second name looked much more real. Google confirmed them.

Finished! I had taken the 'reading' instruction too literally, the it clearly and unambiguously resolved. Thanks again!
