Is fhere a possible error in 22d unclued.?
If I choose C for 4thletter, this messes up 40a
If I choose P for 4th letter, this messes up 31a

Or maybe my brain's frazzled

Jazzgirl, my C (fourth letter) works fine - though I feel the two entries (23 D and 47 A) are ... rather a stretch.

Malone, there is no 47a in my grid.
44a parses OK and gives me H as last letter of 22d

Sorry, jazzgirl. I meant 42 A was a bit of a stretch.

Using the C in 22 D didn't interfere/muck up any of the Across answers for me - my 40 A seems fine.

12 a parses perfectly with only one possible ending, as far as I can see

The unclued that has two possible end letters is 23d and I have opted for the one ending with T
The alternative is related to firearms

re 12a I have parsing as : The French (feminine)last 3 letters;
girl first 3 letters in reverse.

Chambers shows the answer as the 'old' word for the 'oo' :)
