Bit puzzled by unclued 42A - looks like the famous record company who failed to sign the Beatles but what's the last letter ? Never heard it used in the plural, nor with an 'n' to make it an adjective .....

(I spent childhood holidays in 22D so found that one quite easy....)

yes deccan ...its the other proper noun ...a plateau in S india

My 42 has the N and is a plateau on the Indian sub-continent (or something like that, it's days since I looked it up!)

I think 'of' is doing all of the work here, fred - it's a very skimpy clue. Roots of (ie belonging to) remarkabLE VIctory = Levi (Roots).
