Agree this was an easier solve than many recently (especially after yesterday’s prize!). To add to the ‘wanting’ debate, I don’t really have an issue with it as it both made the surface smoother and also one part ‘wants’ (or perhaps needs) the other to create the definition.

I don’t know the “way in” to any of these solutions.

Could someone help or advise please?

First of all, go back through the thread. Several of these have already been mentioned. Here are a couple of additional hints:

17: A three-letter word for fail inside a four-letter curly hairdo (very popular in the 80s.)

19a: Think of a large city with "RON" in the middle.
