This was a good solve for me - I managed to complete without coming to this forum. I found pages 1851/2 of my 2014 hard copy Chambers most helpful. Nice clues at about the right level for the C stream so many thanks Vagans. I shall show the puzzle to the grand-pups who are due to arrive here for half-term - in the hope that it will stimulate some interest.

One minor query: are the additions to 6 and 29 down the same character on a different form?

Specsaver - the 13th edition was updated slightly in 2016

I found all the necessary stuff in the 11th edition (2008).

ah got third group through googling some of the removed characters.

Interesting that while they are in one of the brb lists (based on others' reports given i only have app), they arent actually noted as a definition in the entry.

For reference, you can find the list in the app. They just haven't made it easy to find. At the bottom of the screen you see a square with an up arrow. On the menu you get, click "Help". Then go to "Dictionary Appendices".

Many thanks, MPRS. That’s (almost literally) opened up a whole new set of uses for the app for me - and revealed to me the relevance of the other two down sets, making my admiration for Vagans’ puzzle even greater.

Yes, andyp, that's on the iOS version. I should have specified.

Well, that's 10 minutes of my life I won't get back, mprs! The only box with an up arrow at the bottom of my Android tablet screen is the shift key on the keyboard...
Tried using the three dot menu button and looking through all the options but no sign of the appendices.
Having said that, looking at the old~school paper version of the BRB would have saved me a lot of time searching the web for all the members of what we seem to be calling the *third* group of six.
All done, apart from worrying about the shape of the fifth member of the final group. It's proving to be a real thorn in the flesh (*ahem*).
