Thank you, Check. When I had a full grid and the instructions and the common factor for the across entries, my initial reaction was that this was a GWIT - and one that I wasn’t guessing. But while out for a walk, I realised that I hadn’t fully comprehended the common factor and that it actually gave a strong cryptic steer to the thematic material. Very clever!

Jigjag, Guess What I'm Thinking ... when we solvers have to make a giant leap to see what the setter mneant, planned etc.

Apologies. GWIT = “Guess What I’m Thinking” - shorthand for “there really aren’t sufficient clues for a reasonable solver to work out what’s going on without a big slug of luck.”

In this case, that’s not true. I was just dumb!

Malone, Jack

Thanks, I have not seen that acronym before - Text stuff?

I have got the theme, really enjoyed this EV. Thanks Check.

THanks, Jigjag. I don't think it's really text stuff, it seems just like BRB and LOI to me (insider langiage!).

Jigjag, I can’t speak for Malone but I am so ancient that “text speak” is definitely not one of my languages or scripts. (As to scripts, I’m probably closer in time to hieroglyphs.)

GWIT, like BRB (“Big Red Book“- ie, Chambers) is just familiar shorthand for people like me who spend far too much time on this forum when they aren’t spending far too much time doing crosswords.

Sorry, Malone; another crossed post in which I have essentially just echoed your more pithy response.
