paul 29, I taught Finance, where one must accurately crunch numbers but then effectively communicate the results to non-specialists - hence, lots of practice writing.

Nothing to be sad about, I think - if we only adhered to previously accepted norms we'd still be saying "prithee" and "my liege". Doest thou not agree? But it seems there's a natural tendency to want the culture to freeze right at the point where we finally got a handle on things. If for no other reason, because our music was best.

Where I live in the US, use of the apostrophe as plural seems to have become practically the norm, as in "The Smith's reside here". It's increased exponentially over the past 10-20 years.

For much of my life, that would have been considered an outright solecism and flagrant illiteracy.
Go figure.
