paul & jono, regarding "loose", in my last few years in academia I also saw a sharp rise in the number of students who used "loose" when they meant "lose", to the extent that by the time I finished I saw it as often as not. Since language evolves, and words ultimately mean whatever people mean them to mean, I predict that within a generation or two jono's clue will be the standard usage.

Buddy - sadly you may be right - particularly as teachers increasingly often no longer adhere to previously accept4d norms. Formal grammar lessons are but a reloc of a bygone age. What was your field?
