The invaders started with a “J” if that is any help. Homophones are usually a bit dicey.

7d just about works for me but I can understand why it wouldn’t for many. If I had a quillet it would be that there are rather too many ‘take the first letter from the following word’ indications for one puzzle :-)

For the first time in many Everymans, I had to look up two answers - 22d and 25a. Clearly I was overcomplicating things. For those similarly befuddled, try simply inserting much of the clue in the answer 😡

Similar to Smot. Started smoothly and then found them tricky. Still not sure about two of the four letter clues, 22d and 24a. Always find them difficult. Enjoyed 20a and that's my CoD. 23a good as well I thought. Only just spotted the rhyming pair. In response to recent weeks posts I've been finding Everyman easier. Is it because, as you get older, you've come across more words, had more practice, but then that is countered by failing memory. But today's made up for that - not at all easy for me. A good one, thanks Everyman.

I agree phil10000 - I still don't get 22d. Have crossers T and S?

22d. Parses 1,3. The 3 is a reversal of a word in the clue. Not my favourite clue either.
Neville, yes, your crossers are correct.

Thanks Jono, I'd got as far as the reversal, but I can only think of one solution and it doesn't seem to fit the clue ... oh well, at least none of you seem impressed by the answer either!
