Warden did you guess 9d as next ———? 😀First word means tired (all in). American expression. Whole thing describes those poets.
I did most of this quite quickly but the NW corner held me up. I liked the ageing mathematician in 26a and thought the Spoonerism was clever.

Hi Bowergirl, I did indeed, and then when everything else fitted I didn't double check my answer. I suppose I could've pretended it was an April fools joke 🤣

I think I've heard the correct expression before, but a bit before my time I'm afraid

Enjoyed this puzzle, some challenging, head-scratching clues, but I’m pleased to say I finally finished it before lunch on Monday, without having to look here for help. (That’s unusual, for me.) I particularly loved 6d: is Everyman a Sorry I haven’t a clue fan? :-)
