On a work trip to India, so on an earlier time zone, only slept 3 hours on plane, no idea how brain worked through today's but it did. Lots of simple anagrams, an easy primarily and a fun spoonerism which gets my COD. Now going to snooze.

On the easier side today I thought. Usual suspects all present. I also liked the Spoonerism and also 6d which made me smile.

Yes, pretty straightforward, although I was slowed down by mistyping the last letter of 14. COD for me is 7, very funny.
Thanks Everyman.

For 18, put a full stop after Berengar.

Smot - 18a is simply a two-part general knowledge quiz (part history, part modern languages), rather than a traditional cryptic clue.

I like that in 18 you have to ignore the lack of punctuation!

Started slowly , ground to a halt, got slowly going again, gave up. Couldn't get 4 and 24a nor 6,9 and and 20d.
Did not know the answer to 4a meant over hasty.
For 9d I had never heard of either which makes that clue hard.
Still don't get 18a (though I guessed it) -how does putting a full stop after Berengar help please? And sorry the other hint isn't helping me either.

Hi LoobyLoo10. I didn’t know the answer to 4a means over hasty either, needed Google to confirm. For 9d, it’s fine to Google names of people you don’t know, and maybe best to do that. For 18a, how would someone from Rome say VIII? (I think Everyman has used that device before, so be on the lookout for it.)
Sounds like you did ok though. All the best.

Maybe I didn't guess correctly in 18a -unless the emperor's name can be spelled in a different way -though no support for that from Mr Google or Mrs Duckduckgo

Loubylou, I did the same as you I suspect, but note this is the Holy Roman Empire, so much later and rather more Germanic!
