Thank you for that, xwordfan. I hadn't though of the plant at 1d. Although, yes, 18d could end with a D, I feel that's a bit of a stretch and it's more likely that Doc had Frankie Howerd in mind!

As mentioned by others, I have alternatives for both 2 and 3 down but alternatives suggested elsewhere seem a bit far-fetched to me. I’m pretty sure that the obvious answers are the right ones. Wouldn’t be a Doc though without a couple of dodgy ones!

DUPLICATE POST - TWO THREADS STARTED SIMULTANEOUSLY

Post by Peter284

Am I right in discivering two occasions in this puzzle where unconfirmed alternative answers are possible? Last letter of 3d & first of 17d.

I am sorry but that is not true Norah - Peter284's post was nearly 12 hours after this thread was started by mrcodger.

One way or another this is a bit of a dog's breakfast of a puzzle.

My point last week about being able to complete the unclued lights before starting the clued ones was not about me being a smart-arse but was about the theme being more signposted than a satisfying puzzle should be, so I am inclined to agree with Piffleworthy - I would like my Speccies to be more pencil-chewy.

PS Should I be outraged (near pun intended) by 38 not appearing in Chambers?

I don’t understand what people are talking about with 1d. I have a satisfactory answer but don’t see the relevance to plants or spiders. Am I being dim?

Cloverjo, I think the earlier posts really meant 2 D - where the entry could be a commonish plant or an uncommonword relating to soiders

THanks, Cloverjo. I didn't have the puzzle beside me when I read the earlier comments, so the numbering meant nothing then!
