Three of a kind

Friendly puzzle by Doc, but Chambers gives a choice for the last letter of 3d.

...and a choice of two letters to begin 17 down, unless I'm missing something.

although there is a scottish word beg with F that would do for 17d and would make the triple different to 30d

Xwordfan check your answer to 22 a. This will affect your answer to 17d. I fell into the same trap. However these are still two possible answers for 17d.

I don't underestimate the effort required to create a puzzle of this sort, but these increasingly seem to be dashed off, and are less of a challenge to the solver than before. In this case, four of the unclued lights have two possible solutions (per Chambers). In the final analysis, it's unimportant, I suppose, because there is no ambiguity about the crossing answers, but it seems sloppy, as if not properly checked before publication. Strictly speaking, the preamble is correct, but it could perhaps have been flagged that unclued lights had multiple answers and that either would be acceptable solutions.

I agree that there are 2 possible solutions to 17 down (discounting a third which is hyphenated) and to 3 down. Those are the only ones I've spotted but that could just be because, in the cases of the other unclueds, a solution leapt out at me and so I didn't examine the possibility of alternatives.

18d could end in R or D
1d could be a genus of spiders or the plant...
