Yes, crossers are correct. It's possible that you aren't old enough to understand 13a (I'm not really, but I have heard the expression).

Oh I'm old enough, and got it as soon as I had 3d. I just didn't spot the homophone and presumed the "buggers" were septic tanks rather than lugholes.
