Thanks, Brendan. I've now completed. Of course, the theme connection makes the difference in 7d. My original answer was Swanson although I couldn't fully parse it, Google turned up Swanson, a real Victorian detective with that name and being desperate by snatched at it! Have a nice evening.

You're initial attempt was better than mine, at least there was a detective of that name - I spent 10 minutes trying to justify a Russian chess grandmaster!

7 is a rare British cryptic clue that's easier for Americans to solve (cheesy '70s TV show which I never even watched). 😂 I saw it very early, which revealed most of the theme and sped up solving time.

I think I'm finished. LOI was 16d but I can't parse the first word. I'm thinking I may have the wrong answer. If I ask I'll be spoiling and I've done enough of that already. Any hints to check would be welcome.
