With everything accounted for thematically, I'm struggling to find any justification for a non-thematic 5 letter entry (apart from a single hit after extensive googling - it seems to have found some popularity a mere 5 years ago). I can't see how it can possibly be right but the corrected misprint is the right one in the right place. A good puzzle but for this (I think) so it can't be right, surely?

If you mean the 8th across answer (don't think that's giving anything away) I agree. But it's got to be right. A pity that it seems to be unavoidable, since nothing else would fit the checked letters in that word.

A double unch and no symmetry would have been a better option, in my opinion (this invention sets a bad precedent).

An impressive amount of thematic material in a carte blanche which yielded pretty reasonably
