Back to the usual Paul "guess the answer then work out the wordplay" for me. Can't see the wordplay for 8a but maybe I've got it wrong. I just threw in the only answer I can think of that meets the definition. By comparison, yesterday's Picaroon was a cracker, full of excellent clues and misdirections.

As always, as soon as I posted, I saw the (obvious) wordplay in 8a

i started with 1d, then got 17d, guessed 16a, and the theme fell out. quite rapid after that, though the dates in 12a seem wrong.

btw i'm using an adblocker so don't see the ads, but there seem to be a lot more "blank spaces" where they would be today. are others seeing this?

p.s. i liked the "nonsense word" clues

Hi Chris, now you mention it I didn’t understand those dates either.
I also use ad blockers (two of them) and I don’t see any gapping. I have had occasion in the past to turn them off, quit the browser, and then turn everything back on. That’s as far as my tech advice goes I’m afraid :-)

Took a while to get going with this but once I had 16 the theme fell into place and I romped away. I too liked the nonsense word clues. I always though a Bronx cheer was more of a raspberry - am I wrong?

Agreed on "Bronx cheer", drjax. Nevertheless I wrote in the solution, and it was even FOI.
