Excellent puzzle. As always from this setter, a model of clarity free of annoying ambiguities. What I particularly enjoy about the Listener is the wide range of difficulty encountered from week to week, so nothing wrong with a gentler workout from time to time if it encourages dullards like me. I can't parse 31d either, although the answer's clear enough.

31D - A short synonym for 'as' will get you there ...

An enjoyable diversion. Some interesting words that were new to me and a dollop of old favourites. Thank you Chalicea.

My enjoyment increased as I went through it. All very neat and a subject that I actually knew something about. But I'm another 31 Downer, I'm afraid. Hopefully, like Brendan, I'll see it as soon as I hit .

Hmm? Strange - it ignored the word 'Enter' at the end of my last post.

Nice one Chalicea, thank you. I like when an easier one comes along, it restores the balance and gives me courage for the harder ones.

Thanks to Shirley for a pleasant solve whilst watching footy. So pleased to see so many contributers pre-empting the snide comments of those that don't appreciate a gentler solve.

I concur with what others say. As ever Shirley's clues are scrupulously fair and unambiguous and the endgame doesn't involve an interminable grid stare (thankfully). A huge thank you from me.

This one was my level - so many thanks to the setter. I finished the grid on Saturday and it was a most welcome distraction from the debacle at the Principality Stadium.

I did however succeed in confusing myself thereafter. Somehow or other I had convinced myself that the missing letter in 15 down was S and spent an hour trying to trace a head-dress!. Now corrected but retaining my position at the bottom of the class,

Greetings all from a very damp sand-bank.
