Spike - sorry to hear the news about Jeff. Sadly I never knew his name but I assumed he was quite formal as he never volunteered more than JWS in all the years he was on here. He was a great setter and showed appreciation for good clues. I’m pleased he received so much pleasure from the forum. Please pass my condolences to his wife Ann. Thank you, Paul

Very sad to hear that Spike. I’ve only been here a short while compared to many, but I do remember JWS’s fine contributions. Please pass on my condolences.

@Paul

Jeff was a retired actuary with a healthy appetite for crosswords - no surprise there! He had extensive general knowledge, and hosted many quiz nights.

He enjoyed working in the garden, with much effort put into growing various types of fruit and potatoes.

He had a great sense of humour, quite dry!

His other passions were, bowls, he belonged to a club, and a keen interest in trains, often travelling abroad on train trips.

On the whole, a most affable person, who enjoyed spending time with his family.

Thank you all for your submissions. 12 setters this week and lots of excellent entries making the selection of a single winner very difficult. Just a few observations below of clues that particularly caught our attention.

Straight out of the blocks was Jono with 2 sharp, witty entries @2 and 3 making good use of the “tips” from his puzzle set a few weeks ago. Also liked his biting clue @5.

Liked Mattrom’s simple Ewok clue @4 and we were expecting a Wookie to appear somewhere but it never turned up.

Only clue to use “wok” (pan) was Tyke @7 to give a nice surface.

More nice surface reads from Buddy @11, MPRS @17 and Dorrien @22.

FJ maintained the “naughty but nice” quotient @26 and we liked BBM2’s pointed offer @37.

Sorry if we’ve missed mentioning a few entrants, please keep submitting.

But there has to be a single winner and, as it didn’t involve shoes, just livestock this time, we choose this week’s victor to be Paul @21 for the clever observation that Moke has reflective symmetry to yield Woke - not just the initial letter.

Prizes include, as you would expect, some clever observations on “wokeness”.
Couldn’t resist a musical offering from JJCale for MPRS to remind her of Tulsa.

Enjoy – and don’t forget Peer Review. Will be posting tonight to give you all a headstart.
