The OED entry contrasts a ‘tarpaulin’ as being a “sea-bred superior officer, captain etc” to a ‘military officer’ often appointed to command a ship (presumably with little sailing experience). There’s also a reference from 1894 ”Drake and his brother tarpaulins”

Aristo, Always interesting, and a stunning location on the cliffs near Bondi. I prefer the ones that have a relationship to that landscape (e.g., seem to be growing out of rocks), rather than those that could be anywhere. Being too picky, perhaps.
SS (Chris), I hope your daughter gets to see it. Parking is difficult, but she probably knows that.
