Agreed. The most straightforward clues for a while. Very little recourse to the BRB required which makes a change! I knew the name from a SF book whose name I had never connected with the author in question. Live and learn!

I think this must be the first time I’ve completed one of these without recourse to aids. Unusually I was also familiar with the theme. I expect it will be some time until these two occurrences are repeated!

Hi Brendan @ 9.

I'm all done, apart from understanding the same clue that you had trouble with ("Thin neckwear...."). Hopefully, my posting this will bring inspiration as it did for you! If I haven't followed this up within 30 minutes with a "doh!" posting, perhaps you could put me out of my misery?

Still nothing yet. I'm unsure if the 3rd word contributes to the definition or the wordplay (I'm assuming the former) and also if the last 3 words might be a red herring. Hmm....?

Hi Simon,

the 3rd word is exactly what held me up - I kept trying to make it part of the wordplay, which it isn't - it's a word for "binding" (not an obvious one but you will know it) minus usual "base" + then last three letters are usual "that is" and "square"
