I found this great fun and Ifor deserves congratulating on his clever interpretation of the three rules as well as on his as always great clueing.

Thank you, AP (and others). If solvers get half the pleasure from my puzzles that I do constructing them then I'm more than satisfied. As usual now with the EV a setting blog will appear in due course.

There's no problem with 29d - the word indicated is a dialect form of a word synonymous with the word in the clue (and explicitly given as such by Chambers under the headword for the standard form).

Re 23a, I wonder if you have quite grasped rule 2 - the other six applications of this rule happen to have something in common which might lead you to think that 23a should be similarly treated, but it's actually the treatment of 23a which makes the rule clear.

Spoffy, I'm sure you're right about rule 2. My last experience of the game was many years ago....and relatively brief (3 of the top players that I remember died in 1999 and 2000).

What a great puzzle - enjoyable solve and well done to the setter
