Since this isn't a prize puzzle and it's now four days old I have to admit to spending much too long trying to justify "Bartered Bride" until It suddenly dawned that I had the wrong Czech!

I think the way the unclued answers are all connected by one of the "codes" is quite brilliant but I'm a bit puzzled over the "In the final grid all entries except the unclued ones are in a simple letter-for-letter code" - are we supposed to change all the clued answers in the grid to what will basically be gobbledegook?

... and aren't the unlued entries also in a letter-for-letter code - so why differentiate in the preamble?

I expect, as per usual, I'm missing something obvious as no one else has queried this but I've already gone back over it at least a dozen times so ...

Brendan, this gave me pause for thought, too. I think it means: you do have to change all the answers other than the unclued. So yes, they become gobbledegook. But in the final grid, the unclued answers spell out normal words. They have been one to one encoded, but in the final grid they are normal. It’s the others that are not. Does that make any sense? I didn’t like it, but I couldn’t see anything else

There isn't a problem with the preamble if the grid is filled correctly to begin with, because every clued answer would be encoded before it was entered in the grid - then you'd see the unclued entries gradually appear as straight entries (with just a few blank cells to deduce).
Of course, no-one will have solved the puzzle this way - we've all 'cheated' by entering the clued answers normally, so we're having to encode the clued answers after the fact.

I get it now, that makes sense - thank you Drxx, thanks you Quisling, I can finally put it away:-)

Think that's right, brendan. Wasn't sure whether to convert the grid to 'gobbledygook' at first as one might argue the normal clued entries are in the alternative code but 'final grid' makes it clear there is a further step.

Thank you, Phi. A clever and enjoyable puzzle. I am partial to the thematic material so that was a plus. I confess I did not go the final mile and encode the whole grid. I appreciate the logic adduced by those that did so; but the result I reached seemed eminently satisfying and I didn’t want to spoil that by adding what felt like a chore.
