A superb puzzle, I thought. Took a lot of digging out. My last in was 31ac. Can anyone confirm that the final letter of the third word of the quotation is provided by the second letter of an abbreviation? Otherwise I can't find it.

Defile is the usual 3 letters but the 'backward pass' is an American Football term (7 letters).

Nearly there with this one (double dose of Kruger this weekend). One observation - shouldn't 'wood' be 'wool' in 20A?

33 - first 3 words are the def - 3 letters (Latin) 'power' + 5 letters for 'lies'/stories + 's'

Not sure what you mean by 'fit', granama1 - the last two letters from the extras are the initials of the author (so the quote is only 13 letter).
