Spoffy, I wasn't aware of any accompanying hints. Where can they be found? (I have, of course read everything the setter has provided, carefully and several times).

Thanks xwf. I've never used that site. Interestingly it suggests that this was the work of a consortium. It certainly felt like it as I couldn't get on the wavelength of Set E at all. I think I was looking for recognisable words rather than phonetics and abbreviations. Hey ho. I've spotted the 4 examples. Still don't understand 'factories' but I think this one is for the recycling!

This looked daunting but the division into four mini-puzzles and the guidance given by a few answer lengths as to which set went where made it much more manageable than I initially feared. If I were being pernickety (family chorus off: “IF??!!”) it would have been satisfying to have the one non-word resolved

Granama1, a term that can be both industrial and horticultural. In this context, the work of the latter in producing the unclued term from what is removed is what I think was being adduced.

Thanks Jack. I can only think that I have selected the wrong correction for 'Half of winter...' and/or 'Captain is coming...' because the letters I have don't mean anything to me.

I worked out what was happening chemically in the quadrant and it related to the 'A' element so I left it at that!

Granama, is it possible that you have the corrections right but are looking at them rather than the misprints?

I think there were so many things going on in this + the fact it's all a bit squished in had me all a bit boggled! It must be the most 'preambled' crossword ever.

Some nice clues in there though and no punches pulled on using what I think of as 'Azed words' so there was quite a bit of satisfaction in the process.
