I am not sure about the endgame. In particular I don't understand what the first useful information tells me. Please point me in the right direction.

The duplicated letter sequences stand on top of each other (2 storeys high for the doubles - 3 storeys high for the triples). Everything else is in trouble when you follow the instruction.

..just wondering if i've got the end bit right?......all that's left in my grid are 4 lots of 3 letters + 4 singles? All the rest deleted ? ...and then the usual shading

That is how I see it as well but could somebody please confirm that one of the single letters is on the bottom row.

That should of course be two on the bottom line.
