Thanks you Brendan for explaining the parsing of these clues. I had them but wasn't sure why.

Started an hour ago and got five on first read through with several possibles. This is unknown for me. My first one in was 4ac and this is likely to be my COD (what does that stand for?). I always work through the clues acrosses first, then downs before going back to see if the answers help.

Is the definition for 1ac a record label?

Time for my second read through. I'll be back.

1a is a record label, though pedantic me would have another word first!

My first thought on reading 4a was Ronnie Barker :-)

@Jono:15 - I actually managed to complete that 21x21 last week and felt most proud. I did peck away at it over a couple of days!

However, I've only managed 4 in today's prize, which is more like my usual non-Monday efforts. I'll keep plugging away until Everyman arrives tomorrow....

I found that a little easier than usual although did need to rely on one or two of the hints.

I'm on the wrong side of the pond, but initially suspected a mini-theme connected with 8...On reflection, that material was so heavily mined a while back that it's not so likely.
