Amazingly, a half-decent puzzle from Doc!

I have got all the theme (in spite of a misleading rubric) and I have solved all the clued lights, only excepting the following:

Across

34 = f.... (4). I have the first three letters (all checked by others) but what the fourth should be (and why) remains a mystery.

the last 3 letters means the same as the 4-letter word ?

or s ?!

S as the first 3 letters you have means the same if you put f in front

I presume you have L for the first letter. So if you add s at the end of your 3 letters the word means the same as fL***

Thanks again jazzgirl. A long thesaurus and dictionary hunt confirmns your thoughts; so I'll go with you. I still don't like the clue.

Peter... - a quick look in Chambers, using just the three letters, was all that I needed. I got confirmation of the answer there..
