Useby, the abbreviation used in the answer to 18 D has an entry in Chambers.

I'm very early into the puzzle, having only solved a couple of clues, so if this would be considered too revealing, feel free to ignore. I just have a question about the rules as stated: is the "extra letter" in one clue in each row and column part of the answer as defined in the clue's definition itself, or is it an extraneous letter that results from the wordplay but must be removed in order to meet the definition?

I feel as though it is possible to read this sentence from the preamble as plausibly meaning either interpretation.

Extra letter in wordplay must be removed to meet the definition, yes.

As I have completed Listener and Inquisitor today does anyone recommend going back to last week's Listener which I have about one third done somewhere?
I think drxx hated it?

Thanks to those who posted re the parsing of 25d. I had the unchecked letter as the only cell left to be filled.
Another Listener requiring access to Wikipedia (other encyclopedias are available), but a very straightforward resolution.
Still wondering how the second word of the puzzle title relates to the second word of the theme.
Speaking of which, are we to infer that this is Llig's final offering as a Listener setter? If so, thanks for your sterling work!

I haven’t managed to unscramble the title yet. I can loosely relate the first word to the theme, but not the second. Not that it matters !

All done, quickest yet I think! Although did have more time to myself this weekend than usual…
Very enjoyable

Just three unparsed - help much appreciated:
15 across - my current reading of the wordplay doesn’t indicate the final letter
20 down - don’t know where the middle letter comes from
27 down - have the foot and the carriage, but how to get from one to the other?

Thanks, and thank you Llig

And I’ve just got the title - an alternate phrasing of the thematic pair! Lovely
